Starting off the regular season in Romania with a more than uncomfortable opponent from Pitesti, the team knew they had their work cut out for them. Also adding to the “pain” was missing Washburn and Rasic, both important cogs in the U-BT system.
The match started off strong for Cluj who were up by a solid 11 points after the first quarter, but it immediately became a dogfight with Pitesti reducing the deficit to only 3 by half time and even claiming a short-lived lead by the end of the third quarter. In the end though it was all Cluj, picking off a 21-14 fourth quarter thanks to solid timely made shots from its veterans and are moving on with a W 80 – 76.
Vlad Moldoveanu had a very good night statistically, with 15 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists in roughly 31 minutes of play. While the FGM% isn’t quite there with the level we’ve gotten used to from him, it’s obvious progress is being made and we’re right back on track.
The next match up for Vlad and U-BT is the second leg of the FIBA Europe Cup 2nd Qualifying Round against Ironi Ness Ziona where they are in desperate need of a very solid performance and hopefully a win if they plan on keeping their Europe Cup dreams alive.
