After hosting Euroleague powerhouse Panathinaikos Athens less than a week earlier in the final preseason practice game, U Banca Transilvania Cluj Napoca played the first official match of the season, the Romanian SuperCup against rivals CSM CSU Oradea.
The two teams went head to head for the first two quarters, U Cluj holding on to a minimal 1 point advantage at half time. The third quarter was pivotal for the win as the away team scored 29 points, only receiving 14 and even with the valiant effort of the opponents in the final quarter, Cluj Napoca went on to finish strong and grabbed the first hardware this season has to offer, winning 83-76.
Vlad Moldoveanu had limited playtime, still nursing an injury over the summer and added 5 points, 6 rebounds in the winning effort, but proved to be a pivotal presence on the floor as the team shined with amazing communication and group cohesion. The guys will celebrate but will keep one eye open on the near future as U Cluj is set to challenge Ironi Ness Ziona (Israel) in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FIBA Europe Cup in just a few days time.
