The Romanian side stunned their opponents in the start of the second match of their EuroBasket 2017 Group C opening up a 10 – 0 lead early on in the first quarter and things were looking good, both on the field and in the crowd. The Croatians however called a time-out, brought in some energy and quickly turned the tables on the home team with a 26 – 2 run. The second quarter slowly narrowed the gap but every time the Romanians got within single digit distance, Croatia had an answer.
While never really establishing dominance, the opponents ended up winning the game with a 16 point distance, 74 – 58 even though the Romanians put up a great fight and showed true quality as a team, surprising even the most ardent of critics. Perhaps the biggest difference being made was that of easy or open shots not dropping for the Romanians.
Vlad Moldoveanu sacrificed heavily on his offensive play to create opportunities and keep his team close in the match and ended up grabbing some highlights but perhaps his most impressive feat of the night was shutting down NBA and Philadeplhia 76ers rising star, Dario Saric (27.3% FGM, 11P) while himself scoring 14 points, grabbing 6 rebounds and dishing out 2 assists.
The squad will now look to solidify defensively as they take on international powerhouse Spain in game 3 of EuroBasket 2017 group C, Monday evening at 20:30 local time.
